Inclusive Access

Accessibility Statement

The American Biodefense Institute is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for all users, including those with disabilities. We continuously work to improve the accessibility and usability of our platform.

01
Our Commitment

Accessibility is a Core Principle

As an institution serving government agencies, defense organizations, and public health stakeholders, ABI recognizes that accessibility is not optional - it is a fundamental requirement for mission effectiveness. Our platform is designed to be usable by the widest possible audience, including people with visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive disabilities.

Perceivable

All content is presented in ways that users can perceive, regardless of sensory abilities. Text alternatives are provided for non-text content, captions and alternatives are available for multimedia, and content is adaptable to different presentation formats without losing information.

Operable

All interface components and navigation are operable through keyboard interaction. Users have sufficient time to read and interact with content. Content does not cause seizures or physical reactions. Navigation mechanisms are consistent and predictable across all pages.

Understandable

Information and interface operation are understandable. Text is readable and comprehensible. Pages appear and operate in predictable ways. Input assistance helps users avoid and correct errors in service execution forms and inquiry submissions.

Robust

Content is robust enough to be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies. The platform uses semantic HTML, ARIA landmarks, and standards-compliant markup to ensure maximum compatibility.

Visual Accessibility

Visual Accessibility

High contrast color ratios meeting WCAG 2.1 AA standards (minimum 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text)

Scalable typography that responds to browser zoom settings up to 200% without loss of content or functionality

Consistent visual hierarchy using the ABI design system with clear heading structures and landmark regions

Focus indicators visible on all interactive elements for keyboard navigation

No content relies solely on color to convey information - icons, text labels, and patterns supplement color coding

Reduced motion support via prefers-reduced-motion media query for users sensitive to animation

04
Navigation & Interaction

Navigation & Interaction

Full keyboard navigation support across all pages, forms, menus, and interactive components

Skip-to-content links for bypassing repetitive navigation elements

Logical tab order following visual layout and content hierarchy

Dropdown menus and expandable sections accessible via keyboard with arrow key navigation

Service execution forms with clear labels, fieldset grouping, and error identification

Tooltip and field guidance system accessible via both mouse and keyboard interaction

05
Content Accessibility

Content Accessibility

Semantic HTML5 markup with appropriate heading hierarchy (h1-h6) on all pages

ARIA landmarks (banner, navigation, main, complementary, contentinfo) for screen reader orientation

Descriptive link text that makes sense out of context - no "click here" or "read more" without context

Alt text provided for all informational images; decorative images marked with empty alt attributes

Data tables use proper header associations for screen reader interpretation

Form inputs associated with visible labels using explicit label-for associations

06
Responsive & Adaptive Design

Responsive & Adaptive Design

Responsive layout adapting to screen sizes from 320px to 2560px+ without horizontal scrolling

Touch targets meeting minimum 44x44 CSS pixel requirements for mobile interaction

Mobile navigation with full submenu access and touch-friendly interaction areas

Content reflow at 400% zoom maintaining single-column readability

No loss of functionality when switching between portrait and landscape orientations

07
Known Limitations

Ongoing Improvements

While we strive for comprehensive accessibility, some areas of the platform may have limitations that we are actively working to address. These include complex data visualizations in analytical outputs, dynamically generated service execution results, and certain interactive components that are being progressively enhanced for screen reader compatibility.

We conduct regular accessibility audits and testing with assistive technologies including screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver), voice recognition software, and keyboard-only navigation. Identified issues are prioritized and addressed in our continuous improvement cycle.
